My husband Barney and I and our daughter Madeleine went to Pt. Reyes National Seashore in northern California for day of hiking and beach-walking, back when she was 10 years old, in 2000. They are very close, and this is one of my favorite pictures of the two of them … standing at the edge of the Pacific Ocean at Limantour Beach, holding hands, looking out to the west and to the future.
